Chick Corea’s Pentatonic Lick

Chick Corea Sweetwater Pentatonic Lick Jazz Lesson

Here’s a cool approach to the pentatonic scale from jazz giant Chick Corea. This is from Chick’s interview on Sweetwater ( and it’s the first lick he plays in the intro of the video. Notice how he uses the F minor pentatonic scale over Fmin, but avoids using the b3rd (Ab), and instead replaces it with the 2nd (G). This gives the scale a “suspended” modern sound until Chick finally plays the familiar b3rd at the end of the second bar. You can also look at this approach as simply using the minor penatonic scale built from the 5th of the chord – in this case, a C minor pentatonic scale over the Fmin chord.
